Each year 50+ international collegiate teams compete in SUAS. In 2015, over $50,000 in prize money was awarded to 46 teams: 25 U.S. colleges, 16 international colleges (6 countries), and 5 high schools. The competition is held in June at the United States Navy's Patuxent River Naval Air Station (NAS), site of UAS Test and Evaluation Directorate.
The competition provides a unique student education. It teaches students to develop while on a large (5 to 50+ student) interdisciplinary team, an extreme test of teamwork and leadership. It teaches students to develop over the course of a year, and to iterate on that design over multiple years. It evaluates students on a real-world task, both in design and performance. This teaches students skills unobtainable in classwork alone- this education has proven extremely valuable to employers.
Sponsors enjoy many benefits: direct interactions with student teams for the purpose of outreach and recruitment, academic collaboration on UAS and associated topics, and publicity amongst students, colleges, and the UAS community.
The SUAS competition relies on the generous donations of its sponsors and volunteers. This provides resources for student awards, competition development, and competition operations. Without such donations the SUAS competition would not exist. Thanks to all our Sponsors!
